Mattress and back pain

The Causes of Back Pain

It is estimated that 15% to 20% of adults have back pain during a single year and 50% to 80% experience at least one episode of back pain during a lifetime” explains Devon I. Rubin, MD from the Department of Neurology, Mayo Clinic.

Common causes of back pain from a bed include sleeping position, your mattress, pillow and the way you are getting out of bed. The leading cause of lower back pain is sleeping on your stomach. When you sleep on your stomach, it disrupts the natural shape of your lumbar region and increases pressure on joints and vertebrae.

Sleeping on the wrong mattress is another common cause of back pain. If the mattress is too firm – it does not accommodate the natural curvature of your spine, leading to more pain. And similarly, if it is too soft, it does not provide proper support for the back, causing more pain.

If you are looking for a new mattress, you are getting ready to invest in an asset which will cater to your specific needs. However, it’s also important that it is the best mattress for sleeping in your most comfortable position.

Keep on reading to discover important considerations regarding best mattresses for back pain. Research shows that it isn’t just one type of mattress for everyone, but it’s a combination of factors that help alleviate pain when you sleep.

How Your Current Mattress Contributes to Back Pain

A bad mattress, or a mattress that is just not right for you and your preferred sleeping position, can lead to back pain. Thus, if you already have a bad back – the mattress can worsen your back pain.

In case your mattress doesn’t offer enough support, it’s lumpy and its surface is uneven, it fails to keep your spine aligned and ultimately contributes to back pain.

Last but not least, if your mattress has been in service for about 9 or 10 years, it is long overdue that you replace it. Almost any new mattress will be a better option and will provide more comfort and support than your old, saggy mattress.

Learn in the sections below how back pain affects sleep and how a new bed can solve it.

HOW a good mattress can help

How a Good Mattress Can Help with Back Pain

If you are struggling to cope with back pain, there are a few lifestyle changes that can help you. Changing your mattress is one of the first things you should do. It’s essential to choose a mattress which will provide spinal support and spinal alignment and thus will relieve back pain.

A good mattress can help with chronic and acute back pain by helping you sleep with a straight and natural alignment for your back. While lumpy or unsupportive mattresses force the body to unnatural positions resulting in tense muscles never fully relaxing and hence the pain.

Find out in the following section tips to consider when purchasing a new mattress for back pain.

What to look for in a Bed with Back Pain

It is quite a challenge to choose the right mattress for back pain. With so many options out there! We have put together a list of factors to be taken into consideration when choosing a mattress, especially if you are suffering from back pain: your preferred sleeping position and bodyweight, the firmness, thickness and size of the mattress, and of course sleep trials to name just a few.

Your preferred sleeping position and your body weight are two major factors which determine the firmness of the mattress that you should go for. First of all, a mattress which is either too firm or too soft can’t support your spine properly. If you have wide hips, you should opt for a softer mattress. And if you your hips are narrower, a firmer mattress might be more suitable for you.

  • If you are a side-sleeper, a soft mattress should be your choice because normally the pressure points are more pronounced at the hips and shoulders and with a softer mattress they can benefit from more cushioning.
  • Choosing a medium-firm mattress is surveyed to have the most impact on alleviating back pain. The best approach is to use the sleep trial and see if the medium-firm mattress has the proper support for you. If not, upgrade to the higher firmness.
  • Firm mattresses are better for back and stomach sleepers because it can prevent the abdomen and pelvis from sinking too far into the bed.

Regarding your weight, the lighter you are, the softer the mattress should be and similarly, the heavier you are, the firmer the mattress:

  • If you weigh under 130 pounds, choose softer mattresses
  • If you weigh between 130 and 230 pounds – go for medium-firm mattresses
  • If you weigh more than 230 pounds – you should select a firmer mattress.

Warranty – this is another factor to be taken into account since there are mattresses which have a lifetime warranty, while others have only a few years of warranty. Keep in mind that a mattress should be replaced every 7-10 years, but it depends on how you use it, how you sleep on it and how often you rotate it.

Perfect Material: You can select a variety of materials, this includes: spring, latex, memory foam, etc. Depending on your requirements a certain material may be the best for you. Back pain we suggest memory foam coil hybrid.

Price: When you enter the market to buy a mattress for back pain, you will find that the prices start as low as $500 and often go as high as $2,500.

The cheapest mattress can never be good for not always the best value, so the ones that cost $500 may not be work your money. Most decent mattresses for back pain start as low as $700-900. You can find some better products for about $1200 range.

Expect to spend between $800-1500 for a decent mattress for back pain. If you want a luxurious product, then it can go up to $2,000.

Mattress Sleep Trials. Most mattress sellers offer sleep trials, during which customers can try out their new mattress at home, in their bedrooms, for about 90 to 120 days.  If you are not completely convinced by the features of the mattress, you can exchange it or even return it for a full or partial refund. We highly recommend that you take advantage of this option and try different mattresses in order to find out which one is best for you.

I just replaced my old fancy foam mattress with a Saatva and the results have been astonishing. For one , I'm having vivid dreams and sleeping through the night. As someone who has back and leg pain, I've dreaded going to bed for the past couple years. But this new mattress is exceptional, striking a balance between softness and support. If you have back, leg or hip issues, I highly recommend this mattress. And the customer service was a pleasure to deal with, too! Peace. Out.

The mattress is very comfortable. There was absolutely no chemical smell when opened. We are very happy with our purchase. My only issue is the fact that there is no support on the edges. If you sit on the edge, you just slide off.

We have had the bed 5 months and my husband and I are both sleeping better. Just the right amount of support and softness to relieve our hip and back problems. Company was easy to deal with and mattress and foundation came without any defects and the foundation was easy to put together. The mattress is very heavy and hard to maneuver if you have to. Would be better with handles like other mattresses have. I would recommend this mattress.

After a year, I have to say that I finally sleep like the way you are meant to sleep. My back no longer bothers me, I sleep through the night and I don't bother my wife. I'm a big guy and move a lot. I don't remember anything about the delivery, so that was fine. The mattress looks like the day I bought it, there are no impressios whatsoever. Without a doubt I would buy another mattress from Zen Haven.

We have been sleeping on this bed for over 6 months. It is the most comfortable bed we have ever had. I was nervous about a latex bed as we have only ever had innerspring mattresses. My back felt better on the firm side. The bed is very heavy so make sure you have help when moving it. It was a very good investment and we would make the purchase again if we were to do it all over again!
