mattresses and Lower Back Pain

The Causes of Lower Back Pain

Are you suffering from lower back pain? You are not the only one. “It is estimated that 15% to 20% of adults have back pain during a single year and 50% to 80% experience at least one episode of back pain during a lifetime” states Devon I. Rubin, MD from the Department of Neurology, Mayo Clinic.

Common causes of back pain from a bed include sleeping position, your mattress, pillow, and the way you are getting out of bed. The truth is, often the reason of lower back pain lies in the fact that you are sleeping on the wrong mattress. If you have a bad lower back pain, it’s not always about the firmest mattress you can find. Solid research shows that lower back pain is about personal preference and what feels the most comfortable. If the mattress provides insufficient support while you sleep, this can cause or even worsen pain.

Another common cause of lower back pain is sleeping on your stomach. When you sleep on your stomach it disrupts the natural shape of your lumbar region and increases pressure on joints and vertebrae. Hence the pain.

Keep on reading to discover important considerations regarding best mattresses for lower back pain. Research shows that it isn’t just one type of mattress for everyone, but it’s a combination of factors that help alleviate pain when you sleep.

How Your Current Mattress Contributes to Lower Back Pain

It’s a known fact that a bad mattress, or a mattress that is just wrong for you, can cause back pain. Consequently, if you already have a bad back – it can make your lower back pain even worse.

If a mattress doesn’t provide enough support it leads to poor sleeping posture which strains your muscles, doesn’t keep your spine aligned and ultimately contributes to lower back pain. Simple like that!

Also, if your mattress has been serving you for more than 9 or 10 years, it’s high time to replace it. Basically any new mattress will be better and provide more comfort than your old, saggy mattress.

Learn in the sections below how pain affects sleep and how a new bed can solve it.

HOW DOES PAIN AFFECT SLEEP?

Acute vs Chronic Back Pain

Back pain can be categorized in two different areas. Acute or Chronic pain. Both types of pain can lead to a disruption of sleep of pain can lead to poor sleep when the average adult requires around 7-9 hours of sleep.

The national Sleep Foundation reports that 15% of the survey takers report that hey had chronic back pain. Older adults report that over 50% have back pain, and 2/3rds of those reported poor or disrupted sleep. Those with a problem get around 42 fewer minutes of sleep per night.

Acute pain usually lasts around 6 months and comes on suddenly. Chronic back pain lasts longer than 6 months and have physical effects on the body such as tense muscles, limited ability to move around, a lack of energy, and appetite changes

How a New Bed Can Help with Lower Back Pain

According to a mattress research from Oklahoma State University published in the Applied Ergonomics Journal, “new bedding systems can significantly improve selected sleep variables” and “continuous sleep quality may be dependent on timely replacement of bedding systems.” Thus, the researchers came to the conclusion that just with a new mattress sleep quality increased significantly, while back pain, stiffness and shoulder pain were alleviated.

If any new mattress has such healing properties, add to this magic formula a mattress which matches your particular needs, contributes to the natural alignment of your spine and provides plenty of support! Bliss!

How to chose the right mattress

How a Good Mattress Can Help with Back Pain

If you are struggling to cope with back pain, there are a few lifestyle changes that can help you. Changing your mattress is one of the first things you should do. It’s essential to choose a mattress which will provide spinal support and spinal alignment and thus will relieve back pain.

A good mattress can help with chronic and acute back pain by helping you sleep with a straight and natural alignment for your back. While lumpy or unsupportive mattresses force the body to unnatural positions resulting in tense muscles never fully relaxing and hence the pain.

Find out in the following section tips to consider when purchasing a new mattress for back pain.

What to look for in a Bed with Back Pain

It is quite a challenge to choose the right mattress for back pain. With so many options out there! We have put together a list of factors to be taken into consideration when choosing a mattress, especially if you are suffering from back pain: your preferred sleeping position and bodyweight, the firmness, thickness and size of the mattress, and of course sleep trials to name just a few.

Your preferred sleeping position and your body weight are two major factors which determine the firmness of the mattress that you should go for. First of all, a mattress which is either too firm or too soft can’t support your spine properly. If you have wide hips, you should opt for a softer mattress. And if you your hips are narrower, a firmer mattress might be more suitable for you.

  • If you are a side-sleeper, a soft mattress should be your choice because normally the pressure points are more pronounced at the hips and shoulders and with a softer mattress they can benefit from more cushioning.
  • Choosing a medium-firm mattress is surveyed to have the most impact on alleviating back pain. The best approach is to use the sleep trial and see if the medium-firm mattress has the proper support for you. If not, upgrade to the higher firmness.
  • Firm mattresses are better for back and stomach sleepers because it can prevent the abdomen and pelvis from sinking too far into the bed.

Regarding your weight, the lighter you are, the softer the mattress should be and similarly, the heavier you are, the firmer the mattress:

  • If you weigh under 130 pounds, choose softer mattresses
  • If you weigh between 130 and 230 pounds – go for medium-firm mattresses
  • If you weigh more than 230 pounds – you should select a firmer mattress.

Warranty – this is another factor to be taken into account since there are mattresses which have a lifetime warranty, while others have only a few years of warranty. Keep in mind that a mattress should be replaced every 7-10 years, but it depends on how you use it, how you sleep on it and how often you rotate it

Mattress Sleep Trials. Most mattress sellers offer sleep trials, during which customers can try out their new mattress at home, in their bedrooms, for about 90 to 120 days.  If you are not completely convinced by the features of the mattress, you can exchange it or even return it for a full or partial refund. We highly recommend that you take advantage of this option and try different mattresses in order to find out which one is best for you.

We got our matress a few days ago. My wife has been suffering from lumbar back issues for over a year. We have tried IComfort, Stearns and Foster, and Beauty Rest matresses. We even slept on an inflatable Coleman Matress with a futon pad. Nothing worked. The Saatva Luxery Firm matress has made a remarkable difference in my wife's back pain. I sleep like a rock on it too! Wonderful company, speedy delivery, and great price. Have already recommended it to multiple friends. Thanks for producing a quality product, in America for a great price point. I think it could be a bit more plush on top - I gave it four stars because it is a bit underwhelming in this category. However, I like that it is lightweight because of my age, but the blankets and sheets don't stay fully tucked in underneath. This is most likely because I toss and turn throughout the night, and only purchased a Twin XL. I certainly would recommend a Puffy mattress for the price; I plan to keep it, although I have not slept on it for the entire trial period. I do hope that the integrity of the foam will hold up for several years since this it is not a hybrid mattress. All in all, I am happy with my purchase.

This is my second memory foam bed . The first member foam was probably 10 years ago. It was very comfortable but would get very hot after laying on it in the same place over time. Well after another conventional mattress has pass on I began reading about the “new” memory mattress’s and many talk about the cooling technology that they have now. This mattress is super comfy! I’m a side sleeper and it works for me. I still have some concerns about the heat build up from laying there for a while but is defybetter than the last memory foam mattress that I owned. I’m still in the trail period so I haven’t made up my mind yet. The dilemma for me is the amount of money to purchase the mattress and at this point not to be 100% satisfied. The jury is still out on what I’m going to do.

If you do not do well on soft mattresses and your weight is centered lower in your body, this might not be a good mattress for you. I’m female, 5’ 9”, and carry more weight in my hips than my bust and shoulders. I’m not obese, but I can leg press the whole stack at the gym. Can’t do a chin up to save my life. I’ve that sort of build. For guys and smaller framed women, I can see this mattress being Perfect. I’ll give it more time (because I have 101 days to figure out if I can make this work, which is rad), but it’s probably just not for me.

3. Plush Beds

All PlushBeds’ latex mattresses are designed to help relieve pressure points associated with hip and shoulder pain while providing ergonomic support and alignment. The Botanical Bliss latex mattress is the most customizable, allowing you to fine-tune your firmness at home, so it’s a great option for sensitive sleepers.

We have had the bed 5 months and my husband and I are both sleeping better. Just the right amount of support and softness to relieve our hip and back problems. Company was easy to deal with and mattress and foundation came without any defects and the foundation was easy to put together. The mattress is very heavy and hard to maneuver if you have to. Would be better with handles like other mattresses have. I would recommend this mattress.

First off, the level of service provided by the folks at Avocado, Jay in particular, is bar none. The shipping took a while and there was a complication (fault of the third party shipping company, not Avodcado) and they were incredibly responsive and helpful to resolve it as fast as possible. It's a very comfortable, very firm mattress. More firm than I was expecting honestly, not great for side sleeping. But I'm primarily a back sleeper so I'm good. It does not get hot and moderates temperature very well. I delighted with my puchase. Read Less

After a year, I have to say that I finally sleep like the way you are meant to sleep. My back no longer bothers me, I sleep through the night and I don't bother my wife. I'm a big guy and move a lot. I don't remember anything about the delivery, so that was fine. The mattress looks like the day I bought it, there are no impressios whatsoever. Without a doubt I would buy another mattress from Zen Haven.

We have been sleeping on this bed for over 6 months. It is the most comfortable bed we have ever had. I was nervous about a latex bed as we have only ever had innerspring mattresses. My back felt better on the firm side. The bed is very heavy so make sure you have help when moving it. It was a very good investment and we would make the purchase again if we were to do it all over again!
